"There is no better boat then a horoscope to help a man cross over the sea of life."
Varaha Mihira

Astrology is based upon both Time as well as Place of birth.  The planetary positions are calculated as a function of Time while the directional cross and the segmentation of the Houses are entirely dependent on Place.  Thus an Astrological Chart is created from a point of intersection between Time and Place.

When this ‘point of intersection’ is an individual, we learn of the individual.  But the point can be anything.  If it’s an event, we discover the ins and outs of the event.  If it’s the moment a question is asked, we can often discern the answer.

Why does this work?  Regardless of how it is expounded on or modified, the core idea of Astrological Theory is that the celestial bodies are living organisms which energetically (or, more accurately, electromagnetically) influence one another even as they influence us.  Consider that it is readily apparent that the evident conditions of a Time and Place influence the gamut of experience there.  Astrological Theory merely furthers this to suggest that non-apparent, unseen conditions likewise influence the gamut of experience, and these are observable through the precise calculations of our Science.

As with any body, the cosmic bodies, and the constellations of cosmic bodies, are vessels emanated (vibrationally) downward from a source concept.  These forces are alive and dynamic, and express themselves on uncountable levels.  They can be experienced through specific constructs of thought, through archetypes, through the rhythmic pulses and cycles of the magnetic ocean, through aspects of the mineral, plant, and animal kingdoms, and through color, number, letter, and sound.

Astrology is, then, a language of many tongues.

And a good place to start learning the language is with the letter expressed through each Planet and Sign.  This provides the arrangement which underlies the deepest and most occulted formulas of Astrological Science.

I.                 PLANETS

The primary Astrology of the Mystery Traditions is geocentric – Earth centered.  You, or an event, are expressing through a point of intersection between Time and Place occurring on this planet, and so an examination is made from the perspective of that point on this planet, in a full circle, to see the whole picture of the moment, as it was expressed to that place.  You, or an event, are, then, expressing here as a microcosmic vessel of that living picture, having been distinctively filtered through the nuances of its inherent energetic perspectives and potentials.

There are 10 planets.  Because you are on Earth, it is not counted in the line-up; however Earth’s two luminaries, the Sun and the Moon, are.  By their letter the planets are divided into two groups.  The three “Mother Letters” are the three Primary Forces (Primal Fire, Primal Water, and Primal Air) and represent the three outer planets, the super-conscious bodies Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus, which represent our Triune Presence, the Ruling Trinity of our Being.  The other seven planets are the Septenary of “conscious and creative forces”, reflected in our own inner septenary of conscious and creative forces, and found in the so-called “Double Letters” (or, in English, similar to the vowels), where each has two pronunciations to represent that each expresses in an active and latent phase.

The Planets tell us what energy is at work and where. Example: We see Venus (attraction) form a 90-degree angle with Saturn (limitation).

II.               SIGNS

There are 12 Signs of the Zodiac Wheel.  Their letters are called “Simples” or the Elementary Forces which together are mystically known as “The Kingdom”.  Each suggests the interplay of the three super-conscious forces through the four dimensions collectively known to life on Earth.  So, for example, there is a Sign expressing the experience of thinking through Fire, another for feeling through Fire, etc., so that each of the Primary Forces presents itself with four faces (hence the Cherubim).

The Signs of the Zodiac tell us how – through what building block; through what elemental vehicle – the energies are expressed.  Example:  We know that Mars is expressed fearlessly in Aries but unpredictably in Aquarius.

III.             HOUSES

There are 12 Houses, one for each Sign.  The Signs tell us where, in the context of our experience, the energies are expressed or constricted.  Example:  Is a Planet expressing through Libra in the 1st House of the Self or Libra in the 4th House of Domestic Affairs?
